Journal Ambience (JA) #21 - Say Hello to Mighty No. 52875 aka TETRON!

Hi friends,

I hope you’ve all been keeping well?

For this post I would like to introduce you all to a new character/mech I’ve been designing recently called Mighty No. 52875 aka Tetron:

For the uninitiated, he was designed as an entry into a ‘Robot DesignContest’, held by esteemed game developers of Megaman fame, Keiji Inafune and company, who now formed the game studio/ company, Comcept. The contest was created, to allow their community of fans the chance to enhance Comcept’s impending game, by submitting their own personally designed characters to be implemented into the game, by its creators. This anticipated game is called, Mighty No.9 and yes Mighty No. 52875 is the number given to me by Comcept, as I gladly decided to assist them with their cause in helping them to fund their game.

In Mighty No.9, You play as Beck, the 9th in a line of powerful robots, and the only one not infected by a mysterious computer virus that has caused mechanised creatures the world over to go berserk. Run, jump, blast, and transform your way through six stages (or more, via stretch goals) you can tackle in any order you choose, using weapons and abilities stolen from your enemies to take down your fellow Mighty Number robots and confront the final evil that threatens the planet! (Comcept, 2013, Kickstarter, Comcept, Mighty No. 9, viewed 2 October 2013 <https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mightyno9/mighty-no-9?ref=card>)

The brief was to design another Mighty No. mech, with influences of the respective entrants’ (myself) heritage, country of residence and or birth; where the winners’ designs will be designed into the game, to participate in a game mode called, Battle Colosseum. In which, as the name suggests, involves Mighty No.s duking it out for supremacy.

It also needed to be designed with one (or two) of the following abilities in mind: Fire, Ice, Water, Wind, Lightning or Earth.

My design reflects my country of birth, Australia combined with my country of heritage, Italy. As for its ability I chose ‘lightning’ for I feel the element best reflects both cultures.

The idea behind Tetron came about by combining the following references:

1) Tetra - Is a term used to describe the phenomena known as the fourth dimension and

2) Tron:
2i. Is the name of the entertainment franchise that is a major staple of sci-fi.

2ii. It is also a name that is somewhat associated with robotics/mecha i.e Megatron (Transformers mech),

2iii. In the literal meaning of the word “a combining form extracted from electron, used with nouns or combining forms, principally in the names of electron tubes (ignitron; klystron; magnetron) and of devices for accelerating subatomic particles (cosmotron; cyclotron); also, more generally, in the names of any kind of chamber or apparatus used in experiments (biotron)” (Tron, dictionary.com)

For more information, please refer to my annotations with the illustration, for a more in depth understanding of the thought process behind my design.

Even though this is what I submitted, this is just Stage 1 of the design, as there are components to it that I feel need to be improved and that I wasn’t able to create in time, to meet the deadline. This includes the mechanical/ functional aspects of the design and the need to have illustrations that help demonstrate my explanations for its abilities.

All in all, I hope you have liked this piece of work, particularly the Comcept
design team. Cannot wait for the full game to ship. The BETA was brilliant! I had so much fun and was on a nostalgia trip the whole time. As the title for this post states, below is the design development of my personal brand:

Journal Ambience (JA) #20 - 1 - Mecha Concept Art/Design Piece: Ideation

Ideation work, produced in tandem to create a unique mecha concept art/design piece.

It was originally intended as an entry into the CDW Studios' "Robot Police" themed competition. So there's a hint in regards to the context of what I've been brainstorming.

Please stay tuned for the final (rendered) design...

Journal Ambience (JA) #20 - Brand/Logo Design, Mecha Ideation

Hey friends and followers,

My what a long departure it has been, since the last post I made. My apologies for my lack of online activity recently.

The reason being is that I’ve been quite invested, in a particular project for a client. Unfortunately, I can’t reveal any details as yet, but all I can say is that it is a brand/logo design job.

I look forward to sharing it with you all shortly.

For now, since I can’t show it, I thought I would continue the theme of brand design, by showcasing previous works of mine that I have uploaded into a newly created Brand/Logo Design album on the Facebook domain and “Logos” page on this blog.

In conjunction to working on this brand project, I’ve also been immersed in designing a mecha concept art/design piece. But, I’m afraid that I’m not quite ready to unveil it, so to whet your appetites I thought I would share my ideation work that I’ve been producing in tandem with the final design.

All in all, I hope you have enjoyed viewing this body of work?

Furthermore, to reduce the size of my posts and so that my content is more palpable, starting from now I’ll be uploading work into separate ‘sub-posts’.

The following is what to expect proceeding this post:

SA Weekend: Youth Edition Cover Competition

 - My Entry

In addition to the work presented in JA#19, I also took part in a competition, held by my town’s local news publication company, ‘The Advertiser’ to conceive a unique cover for their publication called, ‘SA Weekend’, for its ‘Youth Edition’.

The idea behind my creation, was to illustrate the great qualities of the youth. Their ingenuity, diversity and creativity and how they use these attributes, to combat adversarial obstacles. In essence, a social commentary of the state of youth’s careers at the moment and their struggle to be noticed and thus find jobs, in their desired fields. It is a visual message to proclaim and remind the world that they do embody great skills, talent and the determination to find opportunities. I suppose it’s also my current personal grief and message to everyone.

In the end, a total of 107 entries were entered into the competition and I was fortunately shortlisted as one of the top 20 finalists.

Last Friday I attended an evening event, held at the company’s office, where the winner’s cover would be revealed. Unfortunately, I was not the winner, but I am glad to have had the opportunity to see inside and marvel at the extravagant Advertiser building and network with several of its key staff and the other finalists.

I hope my illustration appealed to you?

Until next time, thank you for your support.

Journal Ambience (JA) #19 - Drawing Practices: (Andrew) Loomis - Human Head Studies, Life Drawings and Portrait Studies

Hi friends and followers,

I return to showcase my continual development, of practicing drawing Loomis - human head studies, life drawings and portrait studies.

Loomis - Human Head Studies:

The portraits, are of the prominent actor Peter Dinklage aka Tyrion Lannister, from television’s popular fantasy show, Game of Thrones. Additionally, one of these portraits will in fact be one of the illustrations that I will be showcasing and selling from July 18-20th, at Adelaide’s annual Anime and Video Game Convention, AVCON:

(Order of Progression/Development - Traditional Lead Based Illustrations)

Final:

Furthermore, I will be attempting to have copies available in colour and greyscale too.

Life drawing was once again conducted at CDW Studios and my drawings are presented with their respective time durations, of the model’s poses:

All in all, I hope you have enjoyed viewing this body of work?

Thanks again to my Unit 44 cohort, who assisted with correctional feedback.
